Minnesota is still without a Senator for the new Congress that convenes in January. Today the tireless and brave State Canvassing Board is still counting contested ballots - they did the Franken pile and Coleman was up by 350+ votes I just don't remember the exact count, then they started on the Coleman contested pile and NOW Coleman is ahead by 5 (FIVE) votes. The Supreme Court has sent the contested absentee ballots back to the campaigns, the secretary of state, and the state canvassing board and told them to figure out a process to sort out which ballots should be included in the recount, there may be another election before this is settled. And the worst of it all - there is not a shard of equanimity with either campaign. The calls and emails for money continue. The lawyers are on the TV everyday, I did laugh about the ballot that had the "oval" filled in for Franken and then the voter decided to make a statement on the line "only because he is a democrat!" I don't know if they counted that as a Franken vote, a Coleman vote, or a no vote. The academics are having a hay day, they get to test their theories and analysis and predict a winner - seems like "they" are leaning towards a Franken win.
I hope that whoever get elected does the best job they can for all of Minnesota, that they can help to make the system better and not worse. I hope that we are finished with it all before the next election, the court battles, the back stabbing, the half truths.
I think Al will do a good job, I wish I knew who is really going to show up to fill this term. Now Norm we really don't know who is going to show up and nothing that is happening now would give me a clue.
So we are approaching the Winter Solstice and those public servants are counting and counting and counting - they are doing a good job. Minnesota is a state to be proud of when it comes to clean, above board, honest elections --- we are finding the warts, the faultlines, and the Secretary of State is earning his keep. I like this recount a lot more than the one in Florida. I wish this could bring out the best in our candidates, but there aren't enough ballots to count to help with that outcome!
